(Oct. 27, 2022) — Phoenix Physical Therapy (Phoenix) and Messiah University (Messiah) today publicly announced a partnership that will bring an interprofessional outpatient clinic to Messiah’s Winding Hill location in Mechanicsburg, Pa., by the end of this year. The clinic will be open to the public and located in the same facility as Messiah’s accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy and Master of Occupational Therapy programs. It will provide comprehensive physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT) and athletic training (AT) services to the local community.

“The Phoenix team is looking forward to working with Messiah University on this unique opportunity to offer PT, OT and AT services in a single outpatient clinic,” said

Phoenix Physical Therapy and Messiah University announce new outpatient clinic to open in December 2022.

Phoenix director of clinic operations, Franco Madaffari, DPT, LAT, COMT, FAAOMPT. “The clinic will provide manual, hands-on therapy services to a diverse population of patients. These include pre- and post-surgery rehabilitation, injury prevention and recovery, treatment for diseases, including Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis, various illnesses, chronic pain, headaches, pediatric care and development, sports injuries and training, pre-employment screening and evaluation, and therapy for work-related injuries, amongst others. In addition, by having a clinic on a graduate campus, Phoenix will be able to incorporate research-based projects and help students gain experience and develop their clinical skills. We look forward to welcoming the Winding Hill and Messiah University community to our new clinic.”

“Being able to collaborate with a leading national health care organization such as Phoenix across three different applied health disciplines is a win for Messiah students and educators and our local community,” said Rob Pepper, associate provost for graduate and professional studies and university partnerships at Messiah University. “Phoenix’s personnel will work together with Messiah educators as we train and develop the next generation of licensed physical and occupational therapists and certified athletic trainers and bring high-quality, intergenerational PT, OT and AT care to the Mechanicsburg area.”

According to Pepper, the combination of Phoenix’s onsite clinic and Messiah’s recent accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) makes the University an excellent option for students exploring DPT programs. The CAPTE accreditation ensures students receive the required educational experiences with qualified instructors to enter the physical therapy profession. In addition, graduation from a CAPTE-accredited program is required for eligibility to take the licensing exam.

Phoenix Physical Therapy (“Phoenix”) completed three acquisitions in the fourth quarter of 2020, further expanding its geographic reach in Alabama, Delaware, and Maryland and entering the Michigan market.

In November, Phoenix acquired Montgomery East, a well-established outpatient practice in Montgomery, Alabama, strengthening Phoenix’s existing presence in this growing market. Danny Sutter, PT, founded the Montgomery East more than ten years ago and has supported the local community with excellent physical therapy care. Danny will continue to operate the clinic as he and his team join Phoenix.

Phoenix strengthened its presence in Delaware and Maryland’s eastern shore area through the acquisition of Atlantic Physical Therapy (“Atlantic”) in early December. Atlantic has been providing physical therapy and occupational therapy services to residents throughout the Eastern Shore for more than 20 years. The addition of Atlantic adds nine outpatient clinics to the Phoenix family. The combined footprint of the two companies now offers the local community more than 15 convenient locations. Bobby Hammond III, PT, DPT, Eastern Shore resident, and one of Atlantic’s founders, will continue as part of Phoenix’s regional management team, overseeing Atlantic’s clinics as the Director of Clinic Operations.

In Mid-December, Phoenix also completed the Advanced Physical Therapy Center (“Advanced”) acquisition to enter the Michigan market with the company’s eight community-based clinics. Advanced has been providing physical therapy, occupational therapy, and sports medicine services for nearly 30 years. The company is known for creating customized rehabilitation programs to get their patients back to work and play as quickly as possible. Shelley Hanchett, PT, CHT, long-tenured Advanced clinician, and operations leader, is now the Director of Clinic Operations overseeing the Advanced clinics as part of the Phoenix regional management team.

“We are thrilled to add Montgomery East, Atlantic Physical Therapy, and Advanced Physical Therapy Center to the Phoenix family,” said Chris Ciatto, Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix. “All three of these organizations successfully navigated the COVID pandemic and were looking for a partner that would allow them to enhance their infrastructure, fuel ongoing growth, and most importantly support their team members and patients. Phoenix has successfully positioned itself as a mid-market leader in the physical therapy space by being closely connected to our teams and communities, yet large enough to provide our clinics with resources for growth and development. We are confident that the combination of our companies allows us to be better together and poised for continued success.”

Phoenix is actively looking for talented physical therapists looking for the next step in their career and strategic partners seeking growth opportunities for their private practice and their team. If you are interested in partnering with us and taking your business to the next level, please email Dave Hamerling, Vice President of Corporate Development at dhamerling@phx-pt.com.

SUNBURY, PA — Like many businesses, Phoenix Physical Therapy had to change its business amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

While patient traffic has dropped as residents follow stay-at-home orders, Caroline Opperman, facility director at Phoenix’s Sunbury clinic, said they are still seeing up to 70 patients a week. Some patients still visit clinics, while Opperman said there has been an uptick in telemedicine and in-home visits.

Phoenix Physical Therapy Co-Director Chelsea Howe, left, talks with Eduardo Velasco, Harrisburg, while he completes his rehabilitation exercises.

“We’re still probably seeing, on average, about 70 patients a week and things are picking back again,” she said, noting a drop of the normal flow of between 100 and 150 patients a week. “We are getting some people on workman’s compensation claims. We’re not doing too bad. But some people are surprised we are still open.”

“It’s going up and up down a little bit,” Chelsea Howe, co-facility director in Sunbury, said. “At first, not many people were coming in because they were worried (about COVID-19). But people have grown more comfortable with it, and it’s starting to pick up. It’s kind of nice; people are getting used to this new normal.”

Some visits can be handled with telemedicine, allowing for maximum social distancing. In those cases, physical therapists walk patients through exercises they can do at home. It does present some challenges, Opperman said.

“We can show them some massaging techniques, but it can be restricting,” she said. “In some cases, there are hands-on techniques that have their spouses help them with.”

Eduardo Velasco, of Harrisburg, was in the Sunbury facility last week for treatment. He was injured on the job, and while being placed on light duty, he is under rehabilitation.

“I am happy they are open,” he said. “It allows me to do my job. I am an essential. I want to get better as fast as I can so I can provide for my family.”

Howe and Opperman said all Phoenix facilities are following strict social distancing guidelines and taking proper precautions — masks and gloves — for in-home visits.

Chairs have been spaced out throughout waiting rooms, and appointments are staggered, so not as many people are on-site at the same time. Everything in the facilities is sanitized regularly, all physical therapists wear masks and gloves, and patients wear masks.
Hand sanitizer is available in the clinics as well.

“Some have said they don’t want to come in, so we are doing everything we can to make them feel safe,” said Opperman.
The masks do present one challenge, Howe said.

“While we still are doing what did previously, I can’t get the personal interaction we usually get. I can’t see personal expressions,” Howe said.

“We base a lot of what we do off facial expressions, how someone reacts, any pain, and with masks, we can’t really see it.

“We are doing what we can, but I ready for things to get back to normal. I think everybody is getting more comfortable with what is going on.”
