The Mulligan Manual Therapy Concept is a manual therapy approach developed by New Zealand physical therapist Brian Mulligan. This simple yet effective treatment combines mobilization of the affected joint by the therapist with active movement by the patient in order to remove pain and restore function.
Who is it suited for?
Any patient with restricted motion caused by an orthopedic or joint issue, including arthritis, post-spinal surgery pain, headaches, and dizziness, can benefit from Mulligan techniques.
How does it work?
During treatment the therapist will determine if a joint restriction, range of motion loss, or pain is being generated by a joint. The therapist will gently reposition the affected joint in order to allow the patient to move further through their range of motion with reduced pain.
What are the benefits?
Application of Mulligan Manual therapy can reduce pain and stiffness, improve range of motion, and provide a long lasting effect.
Who can perform Mulligan Manual Therapy?
The Mulligan Concept is taught as post-graduate continuing education coursework that consists of an Upper Quarter course, Lower Quarter course, and Advanced course. A therapist who has completed this coursework and has passed the rigorous written and practical examination is considered a “Certified Mulligan Practitioner” or “CMP.”
